1900-S VAM-32

Description

First documented in March 2023 by Brent Fogelberg, VAM-32 is a recently cataloged San Francisco Morgan Dollar variety classified III2 11 C3k, formerly listed as VAM-12A. The most visually dramatic feature is a progressive die crack system on the reverse: a radial crack develops to the right of the U in UNITED in later die states, eventually breaking across the tip of the eagle's right wing. Small die chips appear at the top left of the second S in STATES and at the bottom left of the second A in AMERICA as secondary confirmation points. The S mintmark is upright, slightly high, and slightly right of normal position — a wide-V configuration. Primary die markers include polishing lines through the wing-neck gap and upper tail feathers. This 90% silver San Francisco issue had a moderate mintage relative to New Orleans production. VAM-32's die crack progression makes it attractive to specialists who enjoy tracking varieties across die life stages — early-state examples show only mintmark position and die markers, while late-state coins display the dramatic wing-tip break.
