Error
Description
A relatively recent discovery by PacificWR in 2020, VAM-27A of the 1900-S Morgan Dollar showcases a near-slanted date, a high S mintmark, and dramatic displaced field breaks at UNITE and AMERI. Cataloged as III2 12 · C3d, this variety's obverse carries die polishing lines in RT of LIBERTY as a reliable marker. The reverse offers polishing lines running in two different directions within the wing-neck gap — a detail that separates this die from VAM-5A, which might otherwise cause confusion. Progressive die failure produced a crack at the top of the left star extending into UNITED, accompanied by a displaced field break running from the star to E. A second die crack traverses the top of AMERICA with an additional displaced field break stretching from the wing tip to the tops of the letters. The reverse die is shared with VAM-24A, providing a cross-reference point for attributors working through the 1900-S die marriages. These displaced field breaks represent an advanced stage of die deterioration that gives surviving specimens an unmistakable appearance.
