Description

Jeff Oxman identified this San Francisco Morgan Dollar variety in March 1985. Classified as 17 III2 2 - C3e with a rarity rating of 189 and scarcity ratings of I-2 R-3, the VAM-17 combines a near date position with an S/S repunched mintmark shifted right. The obverse date sits further left than normal lateral placement. On the Reverse C3e die, the mintmark shows slight doubling on the upper right of the top serif, positioned slightly high and to the right. The emission sequence documents shared die usage: on the obverse, die 17 appears in sequence with dies 6, 6A, and 6B, while the reverse die is shared with VAM-7 and VAM-33. These shared die linkages are central to understanding Morgan Dollar die marriages, as the Mint routinely paired and re-paired obverse and reverse dies throughout a production run. The I-2 R-3 scarcity rating indicates this is an uncommon but obtainable variety, with the repunched mintmark providing the most distinctive attribution feature under magnification. =1900-S VAM-17 Near Date, S/S Right= Discovered by Jeff Oxman, March 1985.
