1899-O VAM-34A
Error
Description
Discovered by Herb Zepke in January 2000, the 1899-O VAM-34A Morgan Dollar carries the classification III21 · C3h (High O Shifted Left, Die Breaks Left Star and T) with die pairing number 181. The obverse (III21) exhibits a short die break on the third left star extending toward the rim — a structural die failure where the high point of the star design created a stress concentration that fractured under repeated striking loads. The reverse (C3h) features a die break on the top left of the T in UNITED, another instance of progressive die failure at a sharp design element where stress concentrations develop. The "High O Shifted Left" component of the designation describes the mintmark position: the O is set higher and further left than the standard New Orleans mintmark placement, a hand-punched variation unique to this working die. Community commentary notes that an earlier die state of this variety is likely an "evil mimic" of VAM-40, with almost identical lines in the eagle's wing — meaning that in its early state before the die breaks developed, VAM-34A could be mistakenly identified as VAM-40 based on superficial reverse similarities, and only the development of the distinctive die breaks in the later state definitively separates the two varieties. The Morgan Dollar was struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1899 in 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter. George T. Morgan's design was in its twenty-second year. The concept of "evil mimics" — varieties that closely resemble other varieties and require careful differentiation — is well recognized in VAM collecting, and this warning helps prevent misattribution of early-state VAM-34A specimens as VAM-40.
