Description

Leonard Hinckley identified VAM-11 on the 1899-O Morgan Dollar in February 1974, documenting a doubled 1 in the date where the bottom of the upper crossbar shows slight secondary displacement. The obverse also features open 9s — digits whose upper loops do not fully close — providing an additional diagnostic point. Classified under plate designation 11 III2 5 with die pair C3b, this variety carries a Die Polishing Indicator System score of RH3/LE5, where RH3 denotes a right-half polishing score of 3 and LE5 indicates a left-edge score of 5. The DPIS system quantifies die polishing evident on a specimen, helping collectors identify die states and understand how aggressively the Mint refinished dies during service. Higher numbers indicate more extensive polishing, which progressively removes fine die details.
