1899-O VAM-25A
Error
Description
Brent Fogelberg's October 2021 discovery of VAM-25A on the 1899-O Morgan Dollar identified a die-polished state of the obverse that removed most of the date doubling while retaining slight doubling at the right inside of the ear — a phenomenon that documents the Mint's practice of polishing working dies during their service life, sometimes inadvertently removing variety-defining characteristics. Cataloged as III2 14 C3o with Doubled Ear and O Doubled Top Inside attributes under classification number 181, this variety was formerly designated VAM-37 before reclassification refined its position within the 1899-O catalog. Reverse C3o carries an O mintmark doubled on its top inside surface, providing the second doubled element alongside the obverse ear doubling that survived die polishing. New Orleans struck 12,290,000 Morgan Dollars in 1899, maintaining the substantial output that characterized the facility's later years of operation before its 1909 closure. The selective survival of ear doubling after die polishing reveals the topographic selectivity of the polishing process: field areas and lower-relief design elements received the most material removal, while deeper recesses like the interior of the ear retained their doubled characteristics because polishing tools could not fully access concave surfaces. The O mintmark's top inside doubling documents a separate doubled element on the reverse that, unlike the obverse date area, was also protected from polishing by the mintmark punch's recessed geometry. VAM-25A's reclassification from VAM-37 reflects ongoing catalog maintenance within the Morgan Dollar attribution system, where improved understanding of die state relationships and polishing effects prompts periodic reorganization of existing listings.
