Error
Description
Discovered by Mark Kimpton in April 2004 and revised to its current designation following a 2012 discovery, the 1899-O VAM-14A2 is catalogued as 14A2 III28 C3h for Doubled 89, High O Left, Clashed Obverse n & st, with a DPIS value of RH3/LE5. The obverse die III28 bears clear evidence of die clash: a partial incuse impression of the letter "n" from IN GOD WE TRUST appears adjacent to Liberty's neck, and a partial incuse "st" from TRUST is visible in the right hair vee of the lower hair edge — both transferred when the dies met without a planchet. The reverse die C3h features the O mintmark set high and shifted left. The designation history is instructive: the prior VAM-14A was reclassified as VAM-14A2 following the 2012 finding, reflecting the VAM community's practice of adding numerical suffixes when a known variety is found to encompass distinct sub-varieties. Clashed obverse Morgan Dollars, where reverse lettering ghosts appear on Liberty's portrait, are among the most visually compelling of all Morgan Dollar die varieties.
