Description

Discovered in 2012, this New Orleans Morgan Dollar is cataloged as VAM-14A1, classified III28, C3h (Doubled 89, High O, Clashed Obverse n) (181). The variety tells a fascinating story of die interaction: the obverse shows a single clashed die with a faint partial incuse letter "n" from the reverse word "In" appearing at Liberty's neck, evidence that the dies struck each other without a planchet between them. Remarkably, this first clash impression of the "n" was later erased by a second, stronger clash event, documenting at least two separate die clash incidents during this die pair's production life. The date digits 89 show doubling, and the reverse O mint mark is set in a high position. Die Pair In Sequence values are RH3/B45RE. The sequential clash history preserved on this die makes it a compelling study in die interaction, as the progression from a visible transferred letter to its erasure by a subsequent event reveals the dynamic conditions under which Morgan Dollar dies operated at the New Orleans Mint.
