Description

Credited to Maurice Dubreuil following his December 1974 discovery, this 1899-O Morgan Dollar is cataloged as VAM-13 with the designation Doubled 899 and O/O, documenting both a doubled date and a repunched mintmark on the same coin. The doubling on the 899 digits of the date provides the primary obverse diagnostic. On the reverse, the O/O repunched mintmark shows the original O impression beneath the final position, visible as a secondary outline or bulge around the mintmark. A die marker of particular note is a hook of curved metal on the first 8 in the date, providing an additional attribution point independent of the doubling itself. The New Orleans Mint applied mintmarks by hand to each working die during this era, and the O/O repunch indicates the engraver adjusted the mintmark position after the initial punch, leaving a trace of the first attempt. The combination of doubled date digits with a repunched mintmark on a single variety gives VAM-13 two independent collectible attributions, enhancing its appeal to Morgan Dollar variety specialists who value die marriages exhibiting multiple anomalies. =1899-O VAM-13 Doubled 899, O/O= Discovered by Maurice Dubreuil, December 1974.
