1898-O VAM-4

Description

First identified by Melvin Carmichael in August 1951 and revised in May 2023, this New Orleans Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-4 under classification III2 1 with a C3b reverse, titled O Set High, carrying a rarity rating of 181. The obverse date sits at the left side of the normal lateral position, with polishing lines on TY of LIBERTY serving as the primary die marker. On the reverse, a medium O mintmark is set noticeably high and upright, accompanied by a horizontal die scratch across the top of the eagle's left wing and small short die scratches at the eagle's mouth front and outside edge of the eagle's left leg. The DPIS reads LH3/RH4. This listing has an interesting cataloging history: it was formerly designated VAM-4B and became VAM-4 after the original VAM-4 and VAM-4A were determined to be later die stages of VAM-16 rather than distinct varieties. The high mintmark placement is the quickest screening point, visible even without magnification on well-preserved specimens. =1898-O VAM-4 O Set High= Discovered by Melvin Carmichael, August 1951.
