Description

Martin Field cataloged this die marriage in October 1982. The 1898 New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar VAM-19 is classified as 19 III2 9 - C3c (Very Near Date, Doubled First 8, O Tilted Right) with die pair 181. Struck in 90% silver, the obverse features the first 8 doubled slightly on the bottom right outside of the lower loop, where a secondary hub impression produced extra thickness. The Very Near Date designation indicates the date is positioned significantly closer to adjacent design elements than normal placement. The O mint mark is centered but tilted to the right, a rotational variation in the hand-punched mint mark reflecting the die preparer's placement at Philadelphia before the die shipped to New Orleans. The obverse is also listed with VAM-14, establishing a shared obverse relationship where this die was paired with different reverse dies across multiple die marriages. The shared obverse connection allows collectors to trace this die's usage across 1898-O Morgan Dollar production, linking VAM-19 and VAM-14 through their common obverse. =1898-O VAM-19 Very Near Date, Doubled First 8, O Tilted Right= Discovered by Martin Field, October 1982.
