1897-S VAM-24

Description

1897-S VAM-24 — Gouges at Eye, Eagle's Left Wing. Discovered October 2025 by Ted Sudderth. Rarity not yet established. Obverse III2 13: date at left position on a later die state of the VAM-2 obverse. Die markers: a die gouge and disturbance from the inner eye to the tip of the nose; a small die gouge beneath the upper part of the ear; a die gouge at the outermost point of the cotton leaf. Reverse C3k: die markers include a die gouge at the eagle's left wing fold (viewer's right) and a die gouge above and to the left of the r of Dollar. VAM-24 is among the most recently attributed varieties in the 1897-S Morgan Dollar census, with its October 2025 discovery date placing it at the leading edge of active VAMWorld documentation. The three-point obverse die gouge cluster — eye-to-nose disturbance, ear gouge, and cotton leaf gouge — creates a dense set of positional diagnostics for attribution. Rarity has not been formally established, as population data is still accumulating. Morgan Dollars were struck in 90% silver, 10% copper.
