Description

This 1897 Indian Head Cent displays a pre-cud die crack extending from the 3 o'clock to the 5 o'clock position on the reverse, tracing a path along the right side of the reverse through the wreath area. A pre-cud represents an intermediate stage of progressive die failure where cracks have developed along the rim in a pattern that would eventually result in a full cud break — the separation of a piece of the die face at the rim — if the die had remained in service. The crack pattern outlines the boundary of the future cud, providing a forensic snapshot of die failure in progress. Pre-cuds are collected as precursors to the more dramatic full cud breaks and serve as documentation of how individual dies deteriorated over their service lives at the Philadelphia Mint during the late 19th century. The 1897 Indian Head Cent was designed by James Barton Longacre, struck in bronze composition (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm. The obverse depicts Liberty wearing a Native American feathered headdress, while the reverse features an oak wreath with a shield at the top surrounding the denomination ONE CENT. The 1897 Philadelphia Mint production of approximately 50.5 million cents was substantial, requiring numerous die pairs that each experienced their own pattern of wear and deterioration during service.
