Description
Designated VAM-4A and discovered in October 2008, this 1893 New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar is classified III2 3 with a C3b reverse. The obverse features a doubled 1 below the upper crossbar, along with a die clash showing faint partial incuse t from Trust in the right hair vee of Liberty's lower hair edge. The reverse carries an O mint mark tilted right. A duplication alert accompanies this listing: the 1893-O VAM-2 appears to be the exact same die pair as 1893-O VAM-4/4A. The doubled 1 becomes very difficult — if not impossible — to see in less than stellar grades, explaining the VAM-2 listing as a separate entry. The 1893-O Morgan Dollar had a mintage of just 300,000 business strikes, making it scarce regardless of VAM designation. Any die variety from this low New Orleans output carries inherent rarity, and resolving the VAM-2/VAM-4A overlap remains an active question in the catalog.
