Description
The 1893 (O) Morgan Dollar is a dollar from the New Orleans Mint, belonging to the Morgan Dollars 1878-1921 series. With a mintage of 300,000, this is an extremely rare issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 20% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton, encircled by stars and the reverse displays an eagle with outstretched wings clutching an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by a wreath. The 1893-S with a mintage of 100,000 is the key regular-issue date of the entire series. New Orleans's branch mint, active from 1838 through 1909, produced coins that carry a distinct historical significance tied to the antebellum and postbellum South.
