Description
Discovered by Edwin Miller in January 1970, the 1892-S Morgan Dollar VAM-3 is a Far Date variety distinguished by a centered mint mark carrying a shallow, partially filled upper loop and a horizontal polishing mark across the S. The filled upper loop and the die polishing mark are the primary attribution markers for this variety. VAM-3 shares its obverse die with VAM-10, and VAM-10 has been noted as having a possible 2 visible in the denticles — a feature that may eventually inform the shared obverse die history. The 1892-S Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at San Francisco. As one of the early VAM discoveries for this date, VAM-3 has a long research history, with Edwin Miller's 1970 attribution making it one of the foundational entries in the 1892-S VAM catalog. The Far Date designation refers to the position of the date relative to the denticles.
