Description
VAM-1 represents the Normal Die variety for the 1892-S Morgan dollar, cataloged as III2 1 C3a from die pair (190). The obverse is a standard III2 type with no significant anomalies, though some specimens exhibit a filled-in base of the digit 2. The reverse carries a normal C3 die with a medium IV S mintmark centered and upright. Despite its Normal Die classification, VAM-1 encompasses more than one die pair, as confirmed by holders bearing different die-pair attributions for coins assigned to this number. This has led to the informal subdivision into VAM-1.1 and VAM-1.2 designations to differentiate the observed die combinations. The 1892-S Morgan dollar had a mintage of 1,200,000 pieces, making it one of the lower-mintage San Francisco issues of the era. Collectors pursuing a complete VAM set for the date should note that even the baseline VAM-1 warrants attention to die-pair distinctions when building a comprehensive attribution.
