Error
Description
Discovered by Leroy Van Allen in March 1982, the 1892-P VAM-5 carries special significance as the work of one of the two creators of the VAM classification system. Cataloged as VAM-5 (revised) with die pairing III2 5 and reverse C3a, this Morgan Dollar exhibits doubled Liberty profile details including the hair front, LIBERTY on the right, forehead, nose, lips, chin, and top of the Phrygian cap. The obverse also displays tripled lettering on the bottom inside of E PLURIBUS, elevating this beyond simple doubling into rarer territory. The emission sequence is number 190. Van Allen's discovery of this variety seventeen years after he and A. George Mallis published the first VAM reference in 1965 demonstrates the ongoing depth of Morgan Dollar research. The 1892 Philadelphia Morgan was struck during the final years of the original production run, which paused after 1904 before a brief 1921 revival. The combination of doubling and tripling on a single die is uncommon in the VAM catalog.
