Description
Leonard Hinckley discovered this Philadelphia Morgan Dollar variety in February 1974. Classified as VAM-2, III2 2, C3a (Far Date, Doubled 1-2), the obverse shows the 1 doubled under the upper crossbar and the 2 doubled as a thin line across the top. An open 9 and a date positioned further right than normal complete the obverse diagnostics, with Die Pair In Sequence values of LE4/RE5. This variety shares its obverse die with 1892-P VAM-6, indicating the same obverse was paired with different reverse dies during production. The 1892 date falls among the final regular-issue Morgan Dollars before the series entered its long production hiatus. The far date position, combined with the subtle doubling on two of the four digits, requires careful comparison against normally positioned dates to confirm.
