1892-CC VAM-10

Description

Discovered by Bill Van Note in November 1998 and cataloged by VAMWorld, the 1892-CC VAM-10 Morgan Dollar is classified (revised) as 10 III26 - C3d, a 9 or 2 in Denticles, Wide CC variety from the Carson City Mint. The Carson City Mint, operational from 1870 to 1893, is among the most celebrated U.S. Mint facilities, and its Morgan Dollars bearing the CC mintmark are perennially popular with collectors. The 1892-CC had a mintage of just 1,352,000 pieces — one of the final Carson City issues — making it a key date struck in 90% silver at 26.73 grams and 38.1 mm diameter. The obverse die (III26) features a remarkable anomaly: the top of what appears to be a 9 or 2 is visible within the denticles, accompanied by a raised curved bar in the field spacing between denticles positioned between the 9 and 2 of the date. This suggests a previously used or misaligned element left its impression in the denticle area. The Wide CC mintmark position on the reverse provides a secondary identification point. Die pair 177 is assigned to this variety. VAMWorld notes confirm that the exact same die pair produced both the 1892-CC VAM-10 and the 1892-CC VAM-10A, indicating the VAM-10A represents a later die state of the same marriage. The scarcity of the 1892-CC date combined with this unusual denticle anomaly makes attributed examples especially prized.
