Description

This 1891 Indian Head cent displays a pre-cud die crack extending from the 7 o'clock to 8 o'clock position on the reverse — a significant structural die failure captured at an intermediate stage before it progressed to a full cud (retained die break). A pre-cud represents a die crack that has reached the rim, creating a connected fissure from the design area outward to the edge, which signals the beginning of terminal die failure. On subsequent strikes, continued stress would cause the die fragment between the crack and the rim to break away entirely, producing the raised featureless blob characteristic of a full cud. The crack is located on the lower-left portion of the reverse, spanning approximately 30 degrees of arc between the 7 and 8 o'clock positions. This is confirmed as a different die from the 3 o'clock to 5 o'clock pre-cud also documented for this year, indicating that multiple 1891 reverse dies developed rim-reaching cracks during their service life — not an unexpected finding given the production volume. The 1891 Indian Head cent was designed by James Barton Longacre and struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 95% copper and 5% tin-and-zinc, weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm. The Philadelphia Mint produced approximately 47.1 million Indian Head cents in 1891.
