Description

ELIMINATED — see VAM-35A. Originally cataloged upon its discovery in 2011, this 1890-S Morgan Dollar variety was determined to be identical to VAM-35A, and the VAM-8A designation has been eliminated from the active catalog. Plate designation: 8A III2 1 - C3g, plate (190). The variety features an S mintmark tilted left and shifted right from the standard position, combined with a die break in the left wreath. The reverse exhibits vertical die breaks in the left wreath opposite "UNI" in UNITED — progressive fractures that developed as the die fatigued during San Francisco Mint production. Die breaks in the wreath area are common on Morgan Dollar reverses because fine, high-relief wreath elements concentrate stress during striking. The elimination of VAM-8A in favor of VAM-35A is part of ongoing catalog maintenance, where duplicate entries are consolidated to prevent the same die pair from carrying two attribution numbers. Collectors holding coins attributed as VAM-8A should re-attribute them under VAM-35A.
