Error
Description
Originally discovered by John Kohut in May 2004 and revised in 2016 by John Higginbotham, this San Francisco Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-10A (revised) under classification III2 3 with a C3a reverse, titled Far Date, Die Breaks Both Wreaths, carrying a rarity rating of 188. The date is positioned further from the bust than normal, with DPIS reading LE4/RH5. The reverse tells the more dramatic story: die breaks appear on the right wreath at the second-from-top and top leaf clusters, extending to the right of the top cluster, with additional breaks in the left wreath opposite UN in UNITED. Later die state specimens develop die chips in the field between the right wreath and ME in AMERICA, providing a secondary diagnostic for advanced deterioration. The emission sequence links this reverse to VAM-43. Specimens formerly cataloged as VAM-10E were reclassified as the earlier die stage of VAM-10A without the field chips. Collectors should examine both wreaths carefully under magnification to distinguish the specific break pattern from other 1890-S die crack varieties.
