Description

Discovered in September 2023 by Brent Fogelberg, this late addition to the 1890-S Morgan Dollar VAM catalog is designated 1Q III2 1 · C3a with die pair (184). The obverse die (III2 1) displays heavy polishing lines on Liberty’s portrait concentrated near the eye, forehead, and temple, with additional polishing lines visible inside RTY of LIBERTY. On the reverse, die markers include polishing in and around the wreath bow and within the wing-neck gap, consistent with the C3a reverse classification. The die carries a DPIS of RE3/LH5. Emission sequence data places this obverse in the progression 1Q, 1N, 1I and the reverse in the sequence 1A, 1Q, establishing its position relative to other VAM varieties sharing these dies. As a 2023 discovery on a date that has been studied for decades, VAM-1Q demonstrates that new die pairings continue to emerge even among well-researched Morgan Dollar issues, rewarding persistent examination of San Francisco Mint specimens from this popular collecting year.
