1890-S VAM-1P

Description

Discovered in August 2023 by David Ricci, this San Francisco Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-1P under classification III2 1 with a C3a reverse, bearing the descriptive title Die Breaks Right Reverse. The obverse displays polishing within the letters of LIBERTY, with a chip and line at the left end of the cap ribbon serving as die markers. The reverse tells a dramatic story of progressive die failure: a radial die break extends from the rim through the right star into the wreath, accompanied by a break through the right wreath with die chips on several leaves. A crack from the rim through the tops of MERI widens into a shallow break to the right of R, while a large die chip appears on the bottom right serif of E in AMERICA. Additionally, a crack passes through the tip of the eagle's right wing, continuing up through the first S in STATES and into the rim above T, with a chip at the top right of the S. The date position index is recorded as LH3/RH4. The extensive reverse die failure makes this a visually striking late die state variety.
