Description

1890-S VAM-1A — Punctuated Date, Polishing Lines in Hair. Discovered by Charles Cataldo, June 2000. Obverse III2 1: a small dot is visible between the lower 1 and 8 of the date; polishing lines appear in the hair above the forehead. Reverse C3a: small S mintmark. Rarity R-5 or less. The "Punctuated Date" designation derives from the small raised dot between the 1 and 8, which is visible in the date field and gives the date the appearance of containing punctuation — an artifact of the die surface rather than a deliberate design feature. Polishing lines in Liberty's hair above the forehead are consistent with die-preparation polishing that was not fully removed before the die entered service, and they serve as a secondary obverse diagnostic alongside the date dot. The VAM-1A sub-designation indicates this is a die-state variant of the primary VAM-1 obverse. Charles Cataldo's June 2000 discovery places this attribution in the early era of systematic VAMWorld census expansion. Morgan Dollars were struck in 90% silver, 10% copper.
