Description
Characterized by a high, left-tilted S mint mark with filled loops and a subtly doubled date digit, this 1890-S Morgan Dollar is classified as VAM-14 III2 7 - C3i (Doubled 0, S Set High and Tilted Left), die pair (188). Discovered by Martin Field in August 1979. The obverse (III2 7) shows the 0 in the date doubled slightly at top left, a subtle feature best observed under magnification. The reverse (C3i) carries a mint mark set high and tilted left, with the loops of the S filled — a combination of position and condition that distinguishes this particular reverse die. No Die Pair Identification Specifics (DPIS) have been assigned. The doubling on this date is very faint on non-early die state examples, an important practical note for collectors: specimens in early die state will show the doubling most clearly, while later die states may have lost the doubling detail through die wear and polishing. San Francisco Mint Morgan Dollars offer rich variety in mint mark positioning, and the high, left-tilted S with filled loops is a distinctive diagnostic among 1890-S varieties.
