Description

A far date paired with a high O mintmark doubly repunched at the top left surface and more strongly at the top right outside define VAM-4 in the 1889-O Morgan Dollar series, catalogued III2 8 C3d: Far Date, O/O Top Right. The obverse shows the date set further right than normal at the left edge, with two closely spaced vertical lines at the top left of the R in LIBERTY serving as an obverse die marker. Reverse C3d shows an O mintmark of the III type set very high, with the doubling of the mintmark visible at the left top surface and more prominently at the top right outside of the loop. Discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974 and revised in 2020 by LD Lane (known online as ChiefRet), VAM-4 represents both foundational-era VAM research and modern revision — a common pattern in the ongoing refinement of Morgan Dollar attribution. The 1889-O Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the New Orleans Mint under George T. Morgan's design.
