Description

This VAM carries eliminated status: 1889-O VAM-13D has been reclassified as the same die pair as VAM-13C, and the 13D designation is no longer maintained as a separate variety in the VAMWorld reference. The elimination reflects the ongoing refinement of the Morgan dollar attribution system as high-resolution imaging reveals previously overlooked die identity matches. For reference, the formerly-listed 13D obverse (III2 8) was a clashed die showing a faint partial incuse n from "In" next to Liberty's neck, and a partial incuse st from "Trust" in the right hair vee of the lower hair edge. The reverse (C3a) displayed the clash-transferred raised designer's initial M above the d in "God." The 1889-O Morgan dollar, struck in 90% silver at New Orleans, has a substantial VAM population making die pair consolidations routine as the reference matures. Coins previously attributed as VAM-13D are now attributed as VAM-13C. Collectors holding VAM-13D attributions from third-party grading services should note that eliminated status may affect registry recognition depending on each service's update schedule.
