Description
A contested entry in the Morgan Dollar VAM catalog, the 1889-CC VAM-4A was designated as CC Tilted Left with a Clashed Reverse Partial E. Discovered by Julian Leidman in July 2003, it was assigned die pair 177 with a C3c reverse. The reverse description called for a clashed die with a partial E from LIBERTY on the obverse showing below the eagle's tail feathers on the left side, with part of the vertical bar of E supposedly visible. However, the variety effectively does not exist as described—the letter transfer has never been confirmed, and the LVA has conceded this point. Collectors should be aware that while VAM-4A remains in the catalog for historical reference, no authenticated examples with the claimed partial E clash transfer have been verified. The 1889-CC Morgan Dollar is already one of the key rarities of the series due to its low mintage at the Carson City Mint, and this catalog entry reflects the challenges of documenting subtle die clashes on scarce coins.
