Description
Discovered in June 1984 by Leroy Van Allen himself — the co-creator of the entire VAM classification system alongside A. George Mallis — the 1888-P VAM-19 holds a unique place in numismatic history as a variety identified by the very architect of the method used to catalog it. Carrying a revised designation of 19 (revised) III2 15 with a C3a reverse, this Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar features all left stars doubled toward the rim combined with a slanted date where the last 8 sits far from the rim, though the date remains in a normal lateral position. The pairing of doubled left stars with a slanted date creates a distinctive obverse die that is readily identifiable once the diagnostics are understood.
