Description

This Philadelphia Mint Morgan Dollar is designated VAM-10.2 under Classification III2 8, C3a, documenting a Slanted Date. On the obverse, the date is slanted with the last 8 set far from the rim, while the lateral position remains normal. The reverse is a normal C3a die. Die pair number 190. VAM-10.2 is the same die pair as VAM-10A, linking these two catalog entries to a single die marriage. Multiple die pairs exist for normal slanted date varieties with no significant markers or doubling, reflecting the inherent variability in how date logotypes were impressed into working dies during production. Struck in 90% silver (0.7734 oz ASW) at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1888 Morgan Dollar was part of the continued silver dollar coinage during the Gilded Age. Slanted date varieties arise when the date logotype is punched into the die at a slight angle rather than perfectly horizontal, tilting the digits from their intended alignment.
