Error
Description
Discovered by Ricardo Medina in December 2000, the 1888-O Morgan Dollar VAM-25 is classified as III215, C3d (Doubled Ear, O Set Very High), die pair 181. The obverse shows slight doubling at the top right inside of Liberty's ear, the front of the eye, below the eyelid, and the left side of the lower cotton leaf, with the date set further left than the normal position. This multi-zone obverse doubling, spanning from facial features to cotton leaf details, reveals a hub displacement that affected a broad swath of the portrait area. The reverse C3d carries a mint mark set very high and to the right, positioned so close to the wreath that it nearly touches, a diagnostic that is immediately apparent without magnification. The combination of the unusually high O placement on the reverse with the leftward date shift on the obverse creates a two-sided positional anomaly distinctive to this New Orleans Mint die marriage.
