1888-O VAM-11

Description

Fred Miller discovered VAM-11 of the 1888-O Morgan dollar in February 1979. Revised and reclassified as III27 C3m, this variety is designated Doubled 1 and Wreath. On the obverse, the first digit 1 displays slight doubling below the upper crossbar, while the edge of the nose and lips show subtle extra thickness from the doubling event. The reverse, classified C3m, exhibits slight doubling toward the rim on some leaves in both the left and right wreath sections as well as on the bow. A notable die marker is the presence of split ends in the hair to the left of the bear claw on the obverse, which provides a reliable secondary pickup point for attribution. The New Orleans Mint produced substantial quantities of Morgan dollars in 1888, and VAM-11 represents one of the more distinctive doubled varieties from this mintage. The combination of obverse date doubling with reverse wreath doubling suggests a hub-doubling event that affected both sides of the working die. =1888-O VAM-11 Doubled 1 and Wreath= Discovered by Fred Miller, February 1979.
