The reverse (C3a) exhibits extreme die wear at the periphery lettering and wreaths, with roughness and uneven field conditions at the design edges — a characteristic "crumbled" appearance that results from severe die deterioration where the steel surface has broken down under the cumulative stress of high-volume striking. The polishing component of the designation indicates that mint workers attempted to extend the die's service life by filing or polishing the deteriorated surface, which partially smoothed some areas while leaving the underlying degradation pattern still visible in others. A research note from "JR" suggests a strong possibility that VAM-1K duplicates VAM-1J, with further investigation needed and the VAM-1K discovery piece itself being helpful for definitive comparison — an observation that highlights the ongoing scholarship within the VAM community, where newly discovered varieties must be carefully cross-checked against existing listings to avoid cataloging the same die pair under multiple designations. George T. Morgan's design was struck at the New Orleans Mint in 90% silver at 26.73 grams with a 38.1 mm diameter.
