1888-O VAM-1F

Description

VAM-1F is a clashed die variety on the 1888-O Morgan Dollar, discovered in October 2008 and revised in 2010 under the Van Allen-Mallis classification system. The die pair is catalogued as 1F (revised), obverse III2 1, reverse C3a, die pair 181. The variety is defined by clashed obverse dies carrying faint partial incuse transfers from the reverse: the n of In from the reverse motto appears as a faint impression beside Liberty's neck, and partial lettering from st is similarly transferred to the obverse field. Die clashes of this type occur when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, leaving reverse design elements impressed in mirror image on the obverse die. The 1888-O Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the New Orleans Mint under George T. Morgan's design, which first appeared in 1878.
