Ranked among the celebrated Top 100 Morgan Dollar VAMs, the 1888-O VAM-24 commands attention for its dramatically tilted mintmark — a tall oval medium II O set unusually high and canted to the left. Discovered by Michael Fey in March 1999 and cataloged as III21 - C3l (181), this New Orleans Mint variety is attributed through VAMWorld. The O mintmark sits higher than even the elevated placement on 1888-O VAM-21, and its leftward tilt creates a visual asymmetry apparent without magnification on well-preserved specimens. Mintmark position varieties on Morgan Dollars reflect the hand-punching process used from 1878 to 1921: each working die received its mintmark individually from a punch wielded by a Mint employee, introducing human variability in placement, depth, and angle.
