Description

Discovered by legendary VAM researcher Jeff Oxman in October 1997, this 1888 New Orleans Morgan Dollar is a Top 100 Morgan VAM, placing it among the most collectible varieties in the entire series. Cataloged as VAM-18, classified III212, C3b (Doubled 88, Oval O) (181), the obverse shows the first 8 in the date doubled very slightly at the bottom outside, with the second 8 doubled at the bottom outside as well. The reverse features the distinctive Oval O mint mark, a recognizable variation in the shape of the O punch that distinguishes this die from others used at the New Orleans Mint. Die Pair In Sequence values are RH3 LE5. Top 100 VAMs represent the most sought-after Morgan Dollar varieties, selected for their combination of visual appeal, rarity, and historical significance. The pairing of doubled date digits with the Oval O mint mark gives this variety two independent identification points.
