Description

1887-P VAM-1D Spiked Bottom of Left Wing Discovered by C. Logan McKechnie December 2004. 1D III2 1 · C3a (Spiked Bottom of Left Wing) ( ? ) Reverse C3a – Short horizontal die gouge spike from bottom of eagle’s left wing. DPIS - Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: 1887-P VAM-1D may appear to have a misplaced date (MPD) in the denticles, but review of an early die state coin has shown that this is not the case. Very late die stages do not have the spike at wing due to die wear. These also show a doubled ear on the right inside, again due to die erosion. 1887-P VAM-1D VLDS (No tail) is usually attributed as only 1887-P VAM-1 by the grading services (technically it falls back to 1887-P VAM-1!), but remember tditd.
