1887 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
One of the most extensively doubled Morgan dollar obverses documented, the 1887 WDDO-001 displays multi-directional hub displacement across a remarkable range of design elements. LIBERTY spreads towards the west, while the stars, letters of E PLURIBUS, Liberty's eye, hair details below LIBERTY, and leaves nearest the cotton balls show spread towards the center of the die. The eyelid shows a visible split, the inside of the upper lip is doubled, and hairlines behind the ear are duplicated, bringing the doubling into the most finely detailed areas of George T. Morgan's obverse portrait. Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-II and VAM 12, this variety benefits from independent confirmation across three attribution systems, with the Wexler designation 1887 $1 WDDO-001 completing the triple listing. The VAM 12 cross-reference connects this doubled die to the broader VAM classification where the die marriage is tracked alongside its reverse pairing. The 1887 Philadelphia Mint Morgan dollar was produced during the mandatory silver dollar coinage era, and the WDDO-001 stands among the most dramatic doubled die obverses in the entire series.
