Description
Discovered by Juan Arrioja, the 1887-P VAM-14D Morgan Dollar is classified 14D III2 14 with a C3a reverse. This variety is the late die state of 1887-P VAM-14.3, establishing direct die-state lineage. It features a near date — set further left than normal — combined with a polished doubled ear. The ear doubling at the right inside has been reduced by slight die polishing. Die 3 markers include two vertical polishing lines at TY in LIBERTY and fine polishing lines in the hair gap at the jaw-neck junction. Late-die-state characteristics include die chips at the second 8, a die scratch between TY of LIBERTY with a smaller scratch inside Y, lightly doubled ear inside, and a lightly clashed reverse. The relationship between VAM-14.3 and VAM-14D documents die progression from clearer doubling to a state where polishing and wear have softened features while introducing new markers. Philadelphia struck over 20.2 million Morgan Dollars in 1887, yet this die pair's output was a small fraction of total production.
