1887-P VAM-10A

Description

Discovered in 2017 by Jody Faust, 1887-P VAM-10A is catalogued as 10A III2 10 C3a with the attribution Doubled 18 Displaced Field Breaks 18 and Reverse Legend. The obverse shows a die crack at the bottom of 18 with a displaced field break extending to the rim. The reverse, C3a, displays die cracks at the top of UNITED, STATES, and AMERICA, each with displaced field breaks to the rim at UNITED, TATE, and MER. Tiny die chips appear on five to seven outer feathers from the bottom of the eagle's right wing. Displaced field breaks occur when a die crack deepens and the adjacent metal shifts under striking pressure, creating a step in the die field alongside the fracture. The 1887-P is among the highest-mintage Philadelphia Morgan dollars, struck in volume during the era of compulsory silver dollar coinage. Morgan dollars are 90% silver, designed by George T. Morgan. The obverse date-crack with field displacement and multiple reverse displaced field breaks across the legend make VAM-10A a visually striking variety. Collectors should confirm the field-break steps at each documented legend position before finalizing attribution.
