1887-P VAM-13A

Description

Discovered in 2009 and revised in 2011, the 1887 Philadelphia Morgan dollar VAM-13A is classified III2 13 with a C3b reverse, designated Doubled Stars and Reverse, 7 in Denticles, Clashed Obverse n and ust. The obverse carries a clashed die with a faint partial n from the reverse IN appearing next to Liberty's head and neck, and a faint ust from TRUST visible in the right hair vee of the lower hair edge. The 2011 revision by Noel P. added the U, S, and T clash elements to the original n-only clash description, documenting a more extensive die-on-die contact event than initially recognized. The primary obverse features — doubled stars and the 7 extending into the denticles — provide strong visual diagnostics. The C3b reverse shows doubling on the stars and reverse elements consistent with the III2 classification. The 1887 Philadelphia Morgan had a large mintage, making the base coin readily available. The clash elements demand careful examination because the transferred n and ust impressions are faint, but the 7-in-denticles feature is more immediately visible and serves as an efficient first-pass screening tool.
