Error
Description
Among the earliest varieties documented in the VAM system, the 1887-O VAM-6 was discovered by Maurice Dubreuil in February 1975. Carrying a revised catalog designation of 6 (revised) III2 6 with a C3a reverse, this New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar displays doubling across the first three digits of the date. The 1 is slightly doubled all the way across the very bottom, while both 8s show doubling at the bottom inside of their lower loops. Two long vertical polishing lines in front of the ear serve as a reliable die marker for attribution. Dubreuil's discovery during the formative years of VAM research helped establish the methodology that would eventually catalog thousands of Morgan Dollar die varieties. The revised designation reflects subsequent refinements to the original classification as the VAM system matured.
