Description

One of the most celebrated varieties in the Morgan Dollar series, the 1887/6-O overdate preserves unmistakable traces of an 1886-dated die beneath the final digit, where the underlying 6 remains visible within and around the overpunched 7. Attributed by the Wexler Team as WOVD-001 and cross-referenced as VAM-3 in the Van Allen-Mallis system, this New Orleans Mint variety resulted from the 19th-century practice of reusing working dies across calendar years by overpunching the date — a cost-saving measure that occasionally left visible remnants of the original digit. The 1887/6-O overdate is particularly dramatic because the round lower loop of the 6 contrasts sharply with the angular 7, making the underlying date detectable even on moderately circulated specimens. New Orleans Morgan Dollars from this era were struck in 90% silver at the historic facility operating from 1838 to 1909. Collectors should examine the base of the 7, where the curved remnant of the 6's lower loop is most apparent. As a Cherry Picker's Guide-listed variety, the 1887/6-O overdate is widely recognized and actively sought across all grade levels.
