1887-O VAM-19
Error
Description
A revised attribution in 2017 absorbed VAM-1C into VAM-19, making all formerly classified VAM-1C specimens now catalogued as VAM-19 in the 1887-O Morgan Dollar series. VAM-19 (revised) is designated III2 1 C3b: O Shifted Right, Die Gouge Tail Feathers. The obverse die marker consists of a couple of polishing lines in the gap of the right wheat leaf. Reverse C3b carries a vertical die gouge between the fourth and fifth tail feathers, running down to the wreath bow, along with polishing lines in the wing-neck gap. Discovered by Leroy Van Allen — co-creator, with A. George Mallis, of the VAM classification system — in January 1982, VAM-19 was originally a separate listing before the 2017 elimination of VAM-1C consolidated the two entries. The 1887-O Morgan Dollar was struck in 90% silver at the New Orleans Mint under George T. Morgan's design. The elimination and consolidation of VAM-1C into VAM-19 is an important attribution note for collectors who may encounter older references still listing VAM-1C independently.
