Error
Description
Discovered by Brickie in 2015, the 1887-O VAM-17A is designated Doubled 8-7, Clashed G on this New Orleans Mint Morgan Dollar. The die pair is identified as 17 III2 16 - C3a, plate (181). The obverse (III2 16) is a clashed die showing a faint partial incuse G from the reverse word GOD next to Liberty's neck — this ghost impression was transferred when the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them, causing design elements from one side to imprint onto the opposing die face. The incuse G visible near Liberty's neck represents a mirror-image transfer of the reverse lettering, a hallmark of die clash events. Additionally, the numerals 8 and 7 in the date show doubling from a secondary hub impression. The reverse die (C3a) is a standard pairing. Die clash varieties combined with date doubling create a multi-layered attribution that rewards careful examination — the clashed G is best observed under angled lighting that highlights the shallow incuse impression against the field adjacent to Liberty's neck.
