1887-O VAM-16

Description

Attributed by Martin Field in October 1979, the 1887-O VAM-16 is titled Doubled 1 and Motto, Far Date with die classification III2 15·C3a. The obverse features the 1 in the date doubled as a short spike — a compact secondary impression extending from the primary digit. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is doubled on its right side, adding a second diagnostic element that can be confirmed independent of the date. The date is also positioned farther left than the normal 1887-O die placement, giving the variety its Far Date designation. The New Orleans Mint O mintmark is present on the reverse. The 1887-O Morgan Dollar is a frequently studied New Orleans date within the Morgan series, and VAM-16's combination of a date position anomaly with independent obverse motto doubling provides collectors with three separate attribution points: the spiked 1, the doubled right side of E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the far date placement.
