Description

Discovered by Leonard Hinckley in February 1974, this Philadelphia Morgan dollar is cataloged as VAM-7 under classification III2 7 with a C3a reverse, bearing the descriptive title High Date and carrying a rarity rating of 190. The defining characteristic is an entire date positioned higher than normal within the field. Both open and closed 6 varieties have been documented within this die pairing, adding a secondary layer of collectibility. The date position index is recorded as LH3/B45LE. In August 2023, a VAMWorld community member posted a specimen exhibiting VAM-7 attributes as described, but potentially from a unique die pairing, suggesting that a future die study may expand the known pairings. The relative simplicity of the high date diagnostic makes this variety accessible to collectors at all experience levels, though confirming the specific die pairing requires attention to the die markers on both sides. As one of the earlier discoveries in the 1886-P Morgan series, VAM-7 holds historical significance within the VAM cataloging community.
