1886 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Cataloged as Wexler WDDR-001, this 1886 Morgan Dollar exhibits a very minor doubled die reverse best observed on IN GOD WE TRUST, where extra thickness is most evident along the bottom of TRU. Additional doubling appears as extra thickness on the tips of the eagle's wing feathers. Doubled die reverses on Morgan Dollars result from a misaligned secondary hubbing of the reverse die, and even subtle examples like this one attract specialist collectors who focus on die variety attribution. On the obverse, a light die crack runs along the base of the bust, and strong die polish lines fill the recessed areas of the hair, ear, and nostril, providing reliable authentication markers. No notable reverse die markers have been recorded. While the doubling is minor compared to some dramatic Morgan DDRs, the combination of identifiable spread on IGWT lettering and distinctive obverse die cracks makes this a catalogable and collectible variety for dedicated Morgan Dollar die variety enthusiasts.
